The Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) culminated in at least half a million dead, hundreds of thousands more wounded, and a significant economic toll that is still felt today. Like many towns and cities along the shared border, Khorramshahr was destroyed and emptied. It has since been rebuilt and its population size has nearly recovered.
